A "new" role for the Catholic
Church?
God alone knows if the Church of
Rome will properly apologise and take full action for
the sins of its pastors. Meanwhile mankind is in a dangerous
place, and I am unaware of a guiding/calming/inspirational
role coming from the Catholic Church, or any other Church. • World
Recession, Climate Change, Greed, Anger, Addiction,
Terrorism, Drugs, Murders, Stabbings are the content
making up every news bulletin ...then there is
Clerical Child Abuse. • Isn't it time we were 'coached'
or otherwise encouraged to follow the basic precepts we learned in
school "Love Thy God and Love Thy Neighbour"??
The New Apple tablet computer
For all computer geeks, devotees, students and users,
Apple has launched its newest creation, the "New
Apple". Don't rush to your local supplier folks,
the New Apple doesn't go on sale in the UK until Friday
16th March, and probably soon after in Ireland. The
Late Steve Jobs would have been proud of the New Apple,
he said: • Innovation distinguishes between a leader
and a follower. • Be a yardstick of quality. Some
people aren't used to an environment where excellence
is expected. • Your time is limited, so don't waste
it living someone else's life...Don't let the noise
of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice.
And most important, have the courage to follow your
heart and intuition.
Card Players enjoy Drumderrig House
Every week a group of keen card players gather at Drumderrig
House, Boyle's Private Nursing Home, for a few hands. Residents and non
residents participate. Recently Ita Roche, the only lady present, skillfully
relieved the men of their few bob! • Paula Cull, owner of Drumderrig House,
says "The fact that non residents join in is important. We want our residents to
feel that they're part of the community. Just because people are elderly, it
doesn't mean they've stopped living or enjoying their favourite pastimes."
Playing cards, boules, bingo, keep fit and dancing and music nights are just a
few of the many activities Drumderrig's residents have to hand. Gleesons

Mary O'Rourke on TDs
Former Fianna Fail Minister and veteran Mary O’Rourke
says that TDs in the current Dáil are "not very
bright or intelligent". The former TD for Longford-Westmeath
has also criticised Taoiseach Enda Kenny for not being
smart enough and says it won’t be long until the electorate
start to hate Fine Gael in the same way they hated Fianna

Junkets for Rosc Co Co
Roscommon Co Co has ring-fenced €4,000
for overseas junkets this year, despite slashing
the budgets of a number of local services including
funds for community projects, libraries, roads, playgrounds
and tourism. • Longford is one of 13 Local Authorities
which has allocated no money for foreign trips this
year. • Do you know of ANY benefit we might have got
in the past from sending Co Cllrs on junkets through
the years? I will be delighted to publish details of
such benefits, but hey, I don't expect to hear of any
that could not have been achieved over the phone or
Internet ..

"Feeling the hump"
Through the country ramps are becoming
all-too numerous. It seems a shame that all motorists
must encounter these upsets to car suspension systems
because of the mindless activity of a minority of speedsters • The
appearance of speed ramps on our roads appears
unregulated, and at their many designs at the discretion
of "god only knows whom". Eventually, but
"god knows when", good sense will demand that
the ramps conform to a set design rather than the plethora
of today's humps and bumps!

Triple Your Cancer Risk
Regularly drinking two large glasses
of wine or two strong pints of beer a day triples the
risk of developing mouth cancer, research has shown.
The findings came as it emerged that cancer was responsible
for almost half of all deaths in Ireland last year.
Health experts recommend that men should not regularly
drink more than three to four units a day, while women
should not regularly drink more than two to three per
day. • Read more [here...]

RTE Gaffs - and more
One is entitled to feel that good
example should come from RTE Radio 1. However in this
era of decaying standards the RTE Newsroom lets us down.
On an early morning news bulletin I heard "President
Higgins IS attending a ceremony this afternoon"
...will someone please inform RTE that they should correct
the statement to "President Higgins WILL
attend a ceremony this afternoon". I stress that
this is not an isolated gaff, but an increasingly frequent
misuse of language by the National Radio Station. • Roadsign
makers and the NRA acceptance of incorrect spelling
is widespread. When did Keadue become Keadew? Gurteen become Gorteen? Ballisodare become Ballysadare? Tubbercurry Tobercurry? Enniscrone/Iniscrone/Inishcrone/Innishcrone etc.....
